Saumya Gupta interview: Living above the clouds

We all have dreamt of becoming a pilot one day and flying above the clouds, but very less people are actually able to become one. As fancy as it sounds, it not easy living a life of a pilot. We recently got the chance to interact with Saumya Gupta, 26, a first officer pilot flying with Indigo airlines since the last two years. She has acquired such a high post at such a young age and has indeed, become an inspiration for many. In our conversation with her she shared how her life revolves around travelling and how she manages to find stability in a profession where one is always on-the-go.

Q1) What made you choose this career?

I have a strong interest in travelling and exploring new places. Speeds and heights developed a passion for flying in me which made me choose this profession.

Q2) How does it feel like to be a pilot now?

It feels amazing. I wouldn’t swap it for any other job. Despite of it being hectic and stressful, your passion and the love for your work keeps you going.

Q4) What difficulties do you face in this career?

Flying is one of the most stressful jobs in the world. It comes with time challenges, a lot of responsibility, and you don’t have scope for mistakes. You have this pressure on you to be responsible for everyone’s lives.   

Q5) How does it feel to have a job that is completely travel based?

Having a travel-based job it has its pros and cons. I get to travel and explore places I never thought I would. But sometimes you feel homesick and just want to stay in your home city for a longer time.  

Q6) What all countries have you travelled to so far? And which is one place you want to fly to?

I’ve been to Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Doha, Thailand, Saudi arabia, male, and Istanbul. I would love to fly into New York sometime!

Q8) How do you manage to find stability when you’re always on the go and travelling to some place or the other?

Personal mental stability and peace is very important for someone who travels a lot. You’re good to go as long as you enjoy your own company and are confident.

Q9) What does travel mean to you? How important is it to you?

I’m a free bird and love my freedom. Travel brings me that. I get so many new experiences because of it, so I’d say travelling is pretty important for me.  

Q10) Have you felt any kind of change in yourself since you’ve been in this profession?

Flying brings an absolute lifestyle change. It’s not just a profession, it requires you to be healthy, deal with stress and be calm at the same time. It definitely made me push my limits and made me more calm and compact. It brought in a positive change in me and I like it.
