Coming from a musical family, singing has always played a big part of Sagarika Deb’s life. She first stepped on the stage at the tender age of two and a half years. Passionate about mixing the styles and sounds of Western music with Indian music, a fusion, she started a musical project which introduced her to some of the best talents from different parts of the world, taking her to a completely different level in music at such a young age. Since then there has been no looking back for her.

Safarnama recently got the chance to interact with her, ask her about her work life and how she stepped into the industry and how her work allows her to travel so much.
What are some of your acheivements so far?
I have been inducted in the prestigious Limca Book of Records in their music special addition 2012. I won the World’s first Interent girl band because of which I got a lot of publicity and got invited from BBC news for digital Indians. I have also won an Ema Award for Best live performer (Female). I was awarded with Assist World Records by the Honorable Chief Minister of Pondicherry and was added in their world records book as a part of their research on outstanding achievers. My work was also then noticed by Delhi Desire by Dainik Jagran Group and I was honored as the Young Achiever/Top 10 Shining Faces of Delhi/NCR for the Year 2012.
What inspired you to join this industry?
I have always seen my elder sister and my mother perform on stage. So I always knew I wanted to be a performer. I wanted to be around music so we sang and we used to dance as well. So I started performing ever since I was two and a half years of age. So actually I’ve never known anything else so I always knew I was going to be a singer.
What do you love about your work?
The best part about my work is that it doesn’t feel like work at all. I am a very outgoing person and I love to interact with people. So I get to visit a lot of places and I get to travel a lot so it’s like I’m living my dream and also earning money along with it, so my work time feels like a party time to me.
Were there any difficulties you faced while choosing this career?
Yes, there were difficulties as I had to convince my parents to be a part of this industry. At one point of time they told me to concentrate on my studies and go for a regular 9 to 5 job. I understood their concerns as they were worried that I’ll always be on the go and won’t have a fixed or stable workplace as I would have to travel a lot. But then I convinced them that this is what I have always known and this is what I knew I was going to do the best. So yes, it takes a lot of convincing. But I am blessed that they understood my feelings and they completely supported me. If at one point of time they didn’t support me, they didn’t oppose me as well. So if they would have opposed my choice of career, it would have been a totally different story for me.
What role does music and travel play in your life?
Well, it plays a huge part in my life. Music is the universal language. It connects people, it connects everybody. I feel grateful that I’ve been blessed with a musical voice. Due to this I get to travel to so many places, explore new things and I also earn through it. So they both play a very crucial role in my life.
