Movie Review

Malang

By Tahira Syall

The tiny state of Goa has been a great destination for our filmmakers over the past years. ‘Malang’ directed by Mohit Suri is the story of love and revenge which was shot beautifully in Goa.

The film begins with an action scene and and this movie revolves around a dramatic event which happened in the lives of Advait (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Sara (Disha Patani), during which they cross paths with two police officers – Anjaney Agashe (Anil Kapoor) and Michael Rodrigues (Kunal Kemmu).

Advait, with a disturbing family history travels to goa to have some fun while Sara who is a free spirited, outgoing, girl from London, makes her first visit to India and she too travels to Goa in a quest to conquer and overcome all her fears. The moment they see each other in Goa at a party they are attracted to each other and later make a pact to live their lives to the fullest.

Sara motivates Advait to jump off a cliff and dive into the water which makes him overcome his fear of heights and makes him more open to try new adventures. Next in the movie they can be seen trying out various adventurous sports which were beautifully shot in Mauritius like para gliding, wind surfing, ATV biking, sky diving which they enjoy to the fullest. By watching them do these sports this movie also inspires the audience to try these adventurous sports.

At first they decide to keep their relationship casual but as the story line progresses Advait realises his feelings for her and things begin to get serious between them. Sara was almost molested by Michael Rodrigues. Due to misunderstandings and Michael’s false allegation, Advait was arrested. Five years later after being released from jail he goes on a killing spree on Christmas night.

Advait informs Agashe that he is about to commit a murder but at first Agashe takes him very lightly but in no time a cop named Victor (Vatsal Sheth) has been murdered. Later that night two more cops- Nitin Salgaonkar (Keith Sequeira) and Deven Jadhav (Prasad Jawade) have been killed which makes Agashe more furious. All three cops worked under Michael Rodrigues and were very close to him.

Both Agashe and Michael work together to solve these serious of murder and trace Advaits trails before anyone else is murdered. Later in the movie it is seen that Michael follows Jessie (Elli AvrRam) who is a drug dealer and believes that she is also connected with the case. Later with a twist we all get to know that Sara is also behind these murders helping Advait in taking revenge from Michael who is also murdered in the end.

The title track ‘Malang’ is super hit song followed by ‘Hui malang’ and ‘Humraah’. All the songs have been nicely composed and shot.

Director Mohit Suri has done a great job. Many filmmakers go the psychedelic way while showing the effects of drugs in their movie but Mohit Suri does not take that route and shows the effects of drugs in more presentable manner. Overall the movie was good, filled with a ray of emotions.
