Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani

By Muskaan Singh

Ayan Mukerji’s Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani has the charm of all the good romantic comedy films to have ever existed in Bollywood.

The story revolves around Ranbir Kapoor (Kabir Thapar aka Bunny), Deepika Padukone (Naina), Kalki Koechlin (Aditi) and Aditya Roy Kapur (Avi). These four start their journey of a lifelong friendship with a trekking trip to Manali. While Bunny, Aditi and Avi have always been close, Naina, their long lost schoolmate, is a last minute addition to the group. Bunny is a free-spirited and ambitious bachelor who wishes to travel and explore every city in this world. He’s always up gor impulsive adventures along with Aditi and Avi. But Naina, the “chashmish” is different, she is studying to be a doctor and believes in traditional family values.

As their trekking journey begins, we see a shy and studious Naina trying to fit into Bunny’s group full of adventurous social animals. Few minutes into the first half of the film, we see a brewing chemistry between Bunny and Naina. It’s the typical two opposite personalities getting attracted towards one another kind of story. By the end of the trekking trip, it is Naina who falls for Bunny but she along with Avi and Aditi learn his future plans to travel abroad to continue with his studies in journalism.

This impromptu trekking trip to Manali transformed Naina’s personality and she finally felt the happiness within when she   breaks her monotonous routine of studying day and night to explore a new part of the country. Travelling with a group of somewhat strangers made her happy about her existence and confident to face the world.

The story takes a 8-year leap and takes us to the cultural land of Udaipur. Once again all of them are to reunite for Aditi’s grand destination wedding in a luxurious resort in the heart of Udaipur. The portrayal of the big fat Indian wedding is very evident. With changed mindsets and priorities, they all try to bridge the gap in their friendship to keep the wedding-spirit alive. However, spending time with each other just set everything in place for them. And like every typical Bollywood movie, the hero and the heroine end up together giving the movie a happy ending.

The movie has a wide range of foot-tapping tracks with brilliant choreography ranging from peppy ones like Balam Pichkaari and Badtameez Dil to songs with beautiful lyrics that will calm your soul like Kabira and Subhanallah. The breathtaking views of Manali and the traditional cultures of Udaipur are a treat for the eyes. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has surely set a trend of trekking trips with friends as well as grand and lavish destination weddings.
