Queen review: The movie that inspires a lot of women

Queen is an Indian comedy-drama movie, directed by Vikas Bahl, which has won six Filmfare Awards, two National Awards, and seven IIFA Awards. This movie was released on 7th March celebrating International Women’s Day with a great spirit.

The story revolves around Rani Mehra (Kangana Ranaut) who is a Delhi girl who lives in Rajouri Garden. She belongs to a middle class family, her father being a mithaivala. Due to uncertain circumstances she ends up going to her honeymoon alone taking a trip to Paris and Amsterdam. The movie starts with a loud Punjabi wedding with a very famous song ‘London Thumakda’.

One day prior to her wedding, her fiancé Vijay (Rajkummar Rao) tells her that he no longer wishes to marry her and calls off their wedding. It is shown that despite this inconvenience she still decides to go to Europe and is very nervous about it as it is her first time travelling abroad and that too all by herself.

In Paris Rani meets an Indo French girl, Vijaylaxmi (Lisa Haydon) who later become good friends. Vijaylaxmi gives Rani advice on love, marriage etc. which later boosts Ranis confidence. Although Rani faces a lot of mishaps in her trip like almost getting mugged on a lonely street, she doesn’t let these incidents bring her confidence down and continues on with her journey.

Before you know it Rani is in Amsterdam. She stays in a hostel where she shares a room with three foreign boys. Oleksander (Mish Boyko), Taka (Jeffrey Chee Eng Ho), Tim (Guithob joseph), these three foreign boys play a good role in supporting Rani on her solo trip. In the beginning we can see that Rani has trouble in communicating with them as she doesn’t know English but later we can see a strong friendship bond between them. The girl who didn’t party at all had become a party girl.

The role played by Kangana in this movie is very inspiring and motivating. The scene which had boost a lot of women’s confidence and had them all feeling extremely proud was when Rani rejects Vijay when he comes crawling back to her after seeing her thriving and living her life to the fullest. As she returns back to Delhi from her solo trip she has a smile on her face and we can see that the girl who was shy and did not have a lot of faith in herself at the starting movie had now transformed into this supremely confident and independent young woman. This is the best role done by Kangana till now.

All the foreign characters in this movie, be it Indian single French mother (Lisa Haydon), the child-like Japanese guy, the European artist, play true to their culture. We can also see how beautifully the movie has been shot as we can see how different parts in Delhi Paris, and Amsterdam have been perfectly captured. Director Vikas bahl has done an extremely well job by keeping the movie light hearted and a fun comedy movie yet inspiring for many women out there.

Love Aaj Kal 2 review: The movie disappoints in keeping the name of the film

11 years ago, Imtiaz Ali presented his romantic drama film, Love Aaj Kal to the world. It was a unique film for that time as it focused on two love stories, set in different eras. Saif Ali Khan played the lover boy in both the tracks which built up the interest and kept the audience hooked to the screens. Director Imtiaz Ali has now used this idea once again in a film, which is also titled Love Aaj Kal-2. It features Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan who’s chemistry has always been a talk of the town.

It is a story that tackles the ever-changing dynamic of being in and finding love. Veer (Kartik Aaryan) and Zoe (Sara Ali Khan), reside in Delhi and they meet one night at a nightclub and Veer realises Zoe is special to him. He finds out that she works from a co-working space and ends up joining the same space. Zoe is at first irritated with him but is also interested in him at the same time. Raj (Randeep Hooda), the owner of the co-working space, sees their love blossoming in front of his eyes. Zoe shares her views with Raj that she just wants a casual relationship and nothing serious so soon.

At this point, Raj begins to narrate his own story. This is a time when he was Raghu (played by Kartik Aaryan) and was a school kid living in Udaipur. He was crazily in love with Leena (Arushi Sharma). She too falls for him and one day, they both get caught. Her family asks her to move to Delhi and Raghu follows her to the capital city. He starts to work as a waiter. Zoe is delighted to hear about Raj’s story. She decides to give love a chance. She gets a job offer from Dubai and she deletes the mail as she doesn’t wants to be away from Veer. However, this is when Raj reveals to Zoe that Raghu breaks up with Leena as he turns into a playboy. This and her mother’s (Simone Singh) constant reminder that she shouldn’t sacrifice career for love gives her a push. What happens after, forms the rest of the film

A few scenes in the film are very relatable, since they talk about the complexities of relationships in today’s times. But on the flipside, it’s also quite unconvincing. A few scenes are very well shot and handled. But there are also times where one thinks where exactly the film is leading. Some scenes don’t have the desired impact. Talking about performances, both Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan give their best shot. Kartik does something different and shines. Sara too shows her brilliance and talent on the screen.

Anjaana Anjaani Review: A story of two heartbroken and suicidal people

Anjana anjani was released in the year 2010. It was a Romantic comedy drama film directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Sajid Nadiawala. Star cast included Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor. Music of the movie was by Vishal- Shekhar. The movie was a moderate box-office success. Vishal-Shekhar were nominated for the Filmfare award for best music director for the film sound track. The two stars Priyanka (Kiara) and Ranbir (Akash) are the suicidal strangers who meet while they plan to suicide in twenty days on New Year’s Eve.

Akash (Ranbir) lives in New York City. He has bankrupted his company and is in need of $ 12 million for paying the shareholders. As he is unable to do the same he decided to jump of the George Washington Bridge. He meets kiara (Priyanka) from San Francisco. She is been cheated by her fiancé Kunal (Zayed Khan) both are depressed and they attempt to kill themselves. But they both are prevented from committing suicide by a guard. Ranbir still wants to kill himself and hits himself in a moving car and Priyanka falls on the bridge and breaks her neck. Their Suicide attempts are unsuccessful and in fact they end up in a hospital together.

In this process they become friends. When they are discharged Priyanka takes Ranbir to her apartment and his house has been seized by the bank. They both try to commit suicide for five times but every time they failed to do so. Frustrated with this they both decide to end their lives on 31st December 2009. Now only twenty days were left so they decide to fulfill their unrealised wishes. (Priyanka) kiara helps (Ranbir) Akash find his date and Akash helps to clean up kiara’s apartment. Akash doesn’t know how to fulfill kiara’s wish of swimming in the cold Atlantic Ocean. Kiara falls overboard at the sea and is rescued by Akash . Their Yacht drifts away, stranding them by a coast guard rescuse them. Kiara is depressed and tries to kill herself by drinking bleach and rushed to the hospital. When she is discharged Akash realises his love for her and tries everything to make her happy. Both of them go to Las Vegas for a holiday and there they both end up together.

Kiara tells Akash that she still loves Kunal so Akash insist Kiara to shift with her parents and give another chance to Kunal. He himself moves with his friend and plans to return to India on 31 st December to start refresh.

Akash settles the bank problem and Kiara cannot stop thinking about Akash . On 31 st December she realises that she finally loves Akash. Kunal drops Kiara at the Airport. She reaches the bridge but find herself alone she thinks she will never meet Akash again. Just then he arrives. At the sea Akash proposed Kiara. They then get married and have a baby boy after two years.

Ranbir was at his best like in all the movies but Priyanka was not too goof as in one scene she is shown depressed and immediately next scene she is shown partying . The transition from depressed to partying is very sudden. The movie becomes exhausting at some points. So I give it a 7/10 rating. Priyanka was disappointing

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan Review: The movie makes us realise that love has no gender

Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar’s gay romance seems to have fair first week at the box office. But it witnessed a massive drop in the second week. The subject was to sensitive that impacted its run in the domestic circuit.

Aman Tripathy (Jitender Kumar) and Kartik Singh ( Ayushmann Khurrana) fins love in the capital city of Delhi , where they live. Their love blossoms but the problem starts when they decide to go to Allahabad and convince Aman’s orthodox family for their approval.

The first half is engaging with Neena Gupta (Aman’s Mom) best puch lines Manvi gagroo (Aman’s cousin google) was a show stealer in her own capacity. Gajraj Rao (Shankar Aman’s Father) is the most dominating character in the movie. He has got most of the screen time in the movie even more than ayushman Khurana. He has performed really well. Both serious approach and funny when and whenever needed.

The script is nothing great but the director wants to touch the sensitive issues. The plot could have done with quality humour.

The film has promoted Hindi cinemas first gay story. The audience maybe disappointed with the end product. While Ayushmann Khurrana has done a stellar but Jatinder Kumar takes the cake with his blurry eyes and husky voice.

Although the film has a strong concept, the story and its treatment could have been better. The first half movie was a moderate pace while the second half is a bit dragged. Though the film makes us laugh our heart out but still lacks the intensity in certain moments. The scene where Aman finally stand up to his father could have been enhanced in a better way.

The dialogues are comical and cleverly written.

Coming to the performances Ayushmann gets into the skin of the character. He is fearless and soul of the film. But gets lesser screen time than others. Jitendar fits his role very well. He is sacred where he should be, stands up with his lover when needed. He charms the audience with his innocence. Neena Gupta and Gaj Raj Rao makes a perfect couple and share a wonderful chemistry onscreen. The supporting actors, Pankhuri, Mann, Maanvi Gagroo and Sunita deliver a fine performance

Highway review: The kind of film that leads you to a road of self-discovery

A dream-like film capturing the harsh realities of life is exactly what Imtiaz Ali’s, Highway, is all about. It is his one of the most darkest and raw works yet.

The movie starts with wedding preparations shown in full swing. Rich, South Delhi girl, Veera (Alia Bhatt) steps away from all the preparations and convinces her fiancé to take her for a long drive. As Veera steps out of the car to breathe and take in some fresh air, she gets kidnapped by a group of goons led by Mahavir (Randeep Hooda). She is thrown into the trunk of a truck that drives off to a never-ending highway. She is tied up, slapped, touched, gagged and starved. Veera is sincere simple, passionate and hungry for freedom and living life by her own ways. While Mahabir is a tough, aggressive and a harsh goon.

As they set their journey to a far away land on a never-ending highway, Veera begins to fall in love with the roads and discovers her inner wanderlust and adventurous soul that could never do what it always wanted to. Travelling and roaming around like a nomad made her realise that this is the lifestyle she wants. She also begins to fall for Mahabir, her abductor and also discovers his soft side as he begins to tell her about the struggles in his life. The movie shows a very organic build up of emotions between the two with respectable boundaries and limitations. However, Veera’s little dreamland with Mahabir is destroyed right before her eyes when Mahabir is shot on the orders of Veera’s rich father. Unlike the typical ending of any movie, Veera and Mahabir got separated due to their ill fate.

Beautifully shot and directed in Himachal Pradesh in Northern India, the landscapes are breathtaking and a visual treat. Imtiaz Ali has used travel like artistry to unfold one’s true, inner self. A.R Rehman’s compositions tie the whole film together, giving a very soothing effect to the ears. This is one of the most raw heroine-centric films with utter simplicity shown in the outfits, and minimal to no makeup used in the entire film. Disconnecting from her regular routine and embarking upon a journey with no fixed destination, moulded Veera into a strong personality with the courage to speak her heart out instead of suppressing her emotions

Khwabon Ke Parindey review: A song that almost feels like an escape from the real world

Song: Khwabon Ke Parindey

Album: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)

Composer(s): Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonsa, Shankar Mahadevan

Lyrics: Javed Akhtar

Singer(s): Alyssa Mendonsa, Mohit Chauhan

Every morning when we get up, we think about the dreams we had the night before. We all have dreams. Dreams of success, dreams of failure, dreams of happily-ever-afters and dreams of tragedies. They are an escape from the real world and are very necessary to keep us sane in this fast-moving world. Khwabon ke parindey is a song exactly like a dream, its like an escape from the world.

We’re all always in hurry, to complete some work, to reach somewhere, to be with someone or what now. Rarely do we ever sit back doing just nothing. Being away from all the burdens, expectations and stress in life, sometimes we just need a break from the world and be in isolation to attain inner peace and let ourselves free.

“Hawa mein beh rahi hai zindagi, Yeh hum se keh rahi hai zindagi, Oho ab toh, Jo bhi ho so ho”. These lines just indicate that sometimes its better to let things happen as they happen. We should simoly sit back and see what life has for us in it. We need to trust our stars for once. In the movie, Arjun (Hrithik Roshan) let himself loose for once and the stars aligned for him in a way that his ladylove Laila (Katrina Kaif) herself came to him to bid him a goodbye.

This is when he felt truly happy from within and satisfied with his life. Everything seemed beautiful and the world seemed peaceful. He fell in love with life. One of the most soulful songs, it reminds us to take a break and let things happen on their own. Sometimes giving things no thought is the best thought.

Safarnama review: Whats your ‘story of the journey’?

Song: Safarnama

Album: Tamasha (2015)

Composer: A.R. Rahman

Lyrics: Irshad Kamil

Singer: Lucky Ali

‘Safarnama’ literally means a ‘travelogue’ or ‘story of the journey’. The song is very aptly placed towards the end of the movie, when Ved hears his inner voice and finally understands what he’s made for. The song gives a ray of hope to all and tells us to find who we really are.

We, ourselves are our problem creators and problem solvers. It is within us to make or break oneself. The answers to all questions we have lie within ourselves, all we need to do is understand what we want from our life, who we really are, and what is our purpose in this life.

The song is kind of a moment of enlightenment or awakening for Ved when he finally understands himself. It is very aptly decribed in the lines “O jisey dhoonda zamaane me, Mujh hi mein tha”.

Having a fixed routine, being told what to do, how to act and how to behave since the beginning of time, turned Ved into a robot, not having any say in his own life. Finding oneself, having control over one’s life and being who you really are, is what Safarnama is all about. It makes us realise our destination in life and what we want our journey to be like. Its simply tells us that sometimes we hold the solutions to life’s trickiest problems, all it takes is a little courage to follow your heart.

Phir Se Ud Chala review: Lyrics that will leave you thinking about your life

Song: Phir Se Ud Chala

Album: Rockstar (2011)

Composer: A. R. Rahman

Lyrics: Irshad Kamil

Singer: Mohit Chauhan

How often does it happen that you listen to a song and it calms your soul? All you can think of is peace, satisfaction and serenity. The tunes, beats and melodies make you want to be free. Free from all the stress in this world. You just feel like disconnecting from the world and living in a shell of your own where you have your own freedom. Freedom to do whatever you want. Freedom to travel where you want. Freedom to follow your dreams. Freedom to speak your heart out.

“Sheher ek se, gaaon ek se, log ek se, naam ek”. These lines exactly tell us, that no matter where we live, where we belong to, we’re all the same from within. The basic human feeling to feel free and find who we really are. This songs makes you want to fly places, it tells us to follow our dreams and be who we really are. This song plays exactly at that point in the movie when Jordan and Heer decide to go against the world, and speak their hearts out. Without caring about the world, they set on to a journey in a small little world of their own.

The ultimate awakening of oneself lies in the moment you take a stand for yourself in life and speaking out what you want from your life. There might be times when the world will blame you or put you down, but that isn’t the end of the world. We’re all bad in someone else’s story. But that doesn’t mean you put a stop to your story. Everyone’s happiness and freedom lies within them. “Kisi manzar par main ruka nahi, kabhi khud se bhi mai mila nahi”. All answers to life will be found the day you find yourself. This song tells us exactly that. Set yourself free, travel the world, find who you are and feel grateful for this life.

Kho Gaye Hum Kahan review: Just the perfect song to calm your soul

Song: Kho Gaye Hum Kahaan

Album: Baar Baar Dekho (2016)

Composer: Jasleen Kaur Royal

Lyrics: Prateek Kuhad

Singer(s): Jasleen Kaur Royal, Prateek Kuhad

Sometimes there are some feelings that you feel so evidently but you’re not able to give them a name. The type of feeling that you run out of words while describing them. This is a song that will make you feel exactly like this. We’re all trying to make our place in this crazy, fast, competitive world. We’re trying so hard to fit in that we forget to live in the moment and create a space for ourselves.

Amongst all the noise in the world, this songs reminds you to stop and take a deep breath and just listen to your heart.

“Phisal jaayei bhi toh darna nahi, Ruk jaane ki zarurat nahi”. It reminds us all that it okay to fail in life, its okay if we’re not able to make it, theres always light at the end of the tunnel and theres no need to stop for anything, we just need to keep going.

A song made with so much of purity and simplicity, the moment we hear the first line “Rooh se behti hui dhun yeh ishare de, Kuch mere raaz tere raaz awaara se”, we feel like the whole world around us is moving past us and we’re in a different zone altogether. It takes us to a different world where everything is calm, serene and at peace. This song is a creation that has made a place in everyone’s heart and evokes feelings that you can’t put out in words.
