Makeup Artists have a different skill set and are very talented. They do a great job in enhancing facial aesthetics by applying makeup, determining which materials are the most suitable and having knowledge of different colour palettes and design styles, etc. So in conversation with us is Gouri Kumar who is a makeup artist from New Delhi and is a graduate from National Institute of Fashion Technology, Delhi. She is a former retail artist at MAC cosmetics and now is a freelance makeup artist. So let’s further get into the details about her and her profession.
Q1. Why did you choose this profession?
I was always more inclined towards the creative fields and makeup was something which really helped me show my creativity and earn well at the same time. I have so much fun doing makeup that it doesn’t feel like work. It was and is the best option for me as I also love teaching people and teaching makeup has a lot of scope in times where every girl wants to learn makeup.
Q2. How do you feel about your work?
I love what I do, it keeps me going. I always have an open creative mind, I don’t have fixed working hours and I get to various different kinds of assignments.
Q3. How often do you travel for your work?
A minimum of once a month, I travel more during the wedding season.
Q4. Due to your work how do you manage your personal life?
In my field of makeup, I have never faced a problem in managing my personal life as I have flexible hours and I am my own boss. It works out really well.
Q5. If a client is not happy with their look, how do you respond?
I try to explain why I did the look that way in favour of them and if they’re still not happy I tell them I’m still here and I’ll change whatever is needed till my client is not absolutely satisfied. For eg – in India many a times people want to look fair, I try to explain that carrying your own skin colour will give them a better glow and it won’t grey out, but if they are still not happy I do what they like. In the end what your client wants is the most important thing .
Q6. Where all have you travelled for your work?
I have travelled to several places in India. I have travelled internationally as well to Thailand, Bali, Dubai etc.
Q7. What change has your work brought in you?
I am much more confident, independent and much better at running a business. Ofcourse my creativity and techniques improve everyday and i get to experience new things as well.
