Are nanny’s becoming more like mothers than mothers themselves?

Traditionally, the joint family system acted as a major support system for working young parents. With the decline of joint family system and the rise of nuclear families, it has become very difficult for women to resume their careers after having a baby. Although it is important for both the partners to have an equal responsibility of bringing up the child, the burden of parenting rests on the mother. However, in today’s career driven society, both the partners are motivated to work even after having a baby. Not that it is a bad thing to do, but this situation is what is giving rise to what we call as the ‘nanny culture’.

As soon as a mother delivers a baby, what comes to their mind is “We need to find a nanny for the child”. Raising a child with the help of a nanny has almost become like a norm among today’s working parents. Nanny’s become like the saviours and guardian angels for those mothers who are constantly working or travelling somewhere for work. It becomes very important for them to hire a trustworthy nanny who they know will take care of their baby like their own child.

There is no denying to the fact that the Bollywood industry has also fallen prey to this culture. It is also true that Taimur is papped more with his nanny than any of his parents. In today’s world, a nanny is not a luxury but a necessity. Hiring a caretaker for your child has become so important because often the parents have to travel for work, or are not able to give the child enough time so meanwhile the child should not suffer. Due to this, infants often start connecting emotionally with their nannies and become distant from their biological mothers. Although this is sometimes hard to accept for for the mothers, it is also their helplessness that they are working for a better life ahead. It is not easy to leave your comfort to lead a life full of comfort when there is a constant pressure by the society to look after your child yourself instead of handing over your child to a nanny. However, whether you take care of your child on your own, or seek a nanny’s help, as long as the child is happy and comfortable and the upbringing is done well, it is all that matters.
